⚡️ New Beginnings

Start Small, Keep Moving

We’re often scared to change directions and try new things. Fear of failure stops us from pursuing what we want. We worry about what others would think, we don’t want to look stupid or embarrass ourselves.

These thoughts are common - it’s our ego protecting us, keeping us safe from the cold world out there. But we shouldn’t let it control us.

Mind your expectations. If we set them too high, we may get overwhelmed by everything we need to do or frustrated if it doesn’t work the way we imagined. We can even subconsciously be afraid of our eventual success, especially if it’ll attract a lot of attention on us.

Let’s be clear: starting anything new requires a lot of courage. It’s always a risk, a leap of faith - we never know if it will work or not. The fear won’t magically disappear, we just have to go for it.

We often regret what we didn’t do in our lives more than what we did.

Remember, we all start as beginners, we all suck at first. Greatness only comes with experience through action - we practice, we learn, we improve. There is no shortcut, no other way.

Instead of taking everything so seriously, we can approach new ventures as games or experiments. Why not just have fun and see what happens?

Instead of worrying, we can embrace the challenges and get excited to solve them, learn from the stumbles, and trust in our ability to adapt and evolve. We can focus on the process, not just the outcome.

We don’t have to know and have a plan for everything. Starting small is much better than getting stuck in the planning phase and never actually doing anything.

A journey around the whole world starts with one small step.

Thinking about the next smallest step helps us focus on the most important thing - what we can do immediately to get closer to our goals.

The first step is the hardest. Once you take it, momentum builds, which reinforces our commitment. Each small win fuels the next, making it easier to keep going.

It’s never too late to start something.

Colonel Sanders had numerous jobs throughout his life. He worked on a farm, was a firefighter, a ferry operator, and an insurance salesman among others. After many failures, he franchised KFC at the age of 65.

Ray Kroc was in his 50s when he saw the potential of the McDonald brothers’ burger restaurant and moved on to pursue his vision of a nationwide franchise, which is what became McDonald’s.

Here is what some of the greats had to say on the topic:

“The beginning is the most important part of the work.”

Plato

“The secret to change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.”

Socrates

“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”

Mark Twain

“A time comes when you need to stop waiting for the man you want to become and start being the man you want to be.”

Bruce Springsteen

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.”

Henry David Thoreau

“Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can.”

Arthur Ashe, an American tennis legend and a civil rights activist

This classic also came up and I just had to share it:

”It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me, and I’m feeling good.”

“Feeling Good” by Nina Simone

Key Takeaways

  • Action Over Perfection: Don't wait for ideal conditions. Start now.

  • Small Steps, Big Progress: Focus on the next smallest actionable step.

  • Experiment, Don't Expect: View failures and challenges as learning opportunities.

  • Build Momentum: Each small win fuels further progress.

Let's get started! 💪

I have two challenges for you:

  1. Identify the smallest next step towards one of your big goals and act on it. Do something, no matter how small or insignificant it seems. Start and create momentum.

  2. Try something new. Could be a class or a workshop on something you’re curious about, a new sport, even a recipe. Any activity works. The point is to get out of your comfort zone and make your life just a little more challenging and interesting.

Thank you for supporting and sticking around!
